Equal Opportunity in Engineering

The Equal Opportunity in Engineering Program was founded by the College of Engineering in 1970 to provide support for achieving a student body with a Hispanic, African American and Native American population representative of the distribution of these populations within the state. Today the program

  1. promotes academic excellence for more than 912 African American, Hispanic and Native American engineering students;
  2. provides the identified freshman population with enrichment instruction in calculus, physics and chemistry; and
  3. assures the targeted students access to peer counseling, mentor programs, study groups, research opportunities, design teams, and career advising.

Women in Engineering Program

The Women in Engineering Program (WEP) mission is to:

  1. educate girls and women about engineering,
  2. inspire women to pursue the unlimited opportunities with-in the world of engineering and
  3. unleash the potential of engineering-educated women to benefit society.

Since 1992, WEP has impacted and influenced more than 2,200 alumni, in addition to the over 1,500 female students currently enrolled at UT representing over 21 percent of the total engineering student body. WEP initiatives focus on

  1. pre-college outreach,
  2. academic enrichment and community building, and
  3. career development.

Cooperative Engineering Education Program

Qualified undergraduate students can choose to alternate semesters of classroom study with work in their field. Students were employed for 235 work terms during 2002-03 by 118 employers. Students' combined income totaled more than $2.3 million. 14 percent of B.S. graduates were Co-op students.

Engineering Career Assistance Center

On-campus interviewing, individual career counseling, career-related workshops, and job search preparation help students make the transition from academic to professional life. During 2002-03, 240 companies granted 5,317 interviews.

Average Annual Starting Salaries (with industry)
Aerospace Engineering $48,981
Architectural Engineering $43,103
Chemical Engineering $53,371
Civil Engineering $42,838
Electrical Engineering $55,479

Faculty

Engineering Institute for Teaching and Learning

New faculty, experienced faculty, and future faculty are learning how to teach more effectively through a series of workshops, seminars, and other programs offered in conjunction with the Faculty Innovation Center. For more than 30 years, this program has helped many faculty be more effective in the classroom.

Faculty Innovation Center

Our mission is to support instructional innovation by providing media and instructional development services within the College of Engineering. A key strategic goal of the College of Engineering is to enhance and improve the quality of instruction. In part due to the pace of technological change, faculty need assistance in evaluating the appropriate use of instructional technology and they need ongoing training and support for integrating technologies into their teaching and instruction. A primary objective is to have the majority of the College faculty become innovative instructors who move away from faculty-centered approaches to student-centered instruction

Alumni

Center for Lifelong Engineering Education

The College's continuing education arm combines over 30 years of experience with exceptional faculty and industry experts to offer results-based programs on the latest topics impacting industry. The Center for Lifelong Engineering Education provides learning opportunities tailored to fit engineering professional needs via

  1. master's degrees,
  2. certificate programs,
  3. online learning, and
  4. on-site programs.

Topics currently included in the center's portfolio are:

  1. circuit design,
  2. construction,
  3. environment,
  4. management,
  5. petroleum,
  6. project management,
  7. quality,
  8. software, and
  9. transportation.

These programs helped more than 2,500 engineers continue their professional development.

Alumni Relations

The alumni relations program was developed in 2001 to ensure an organized framework for the College to promote a strong sense of community and collegiality among students, faculty, staff and alumni. In 2002-2003, the program held various events throughout the year, including Engineering Homecoming Weekend. The program also initiated the Engineering Student-Alumni Relations Team (START) in conjunction with the Student Engineering Council to help build student-alumni relations. There were also continuous efforts put forth with the Engineering Alumni Volunteer Network and "Engineering Traditions" marketing campaign.
