In all of the Cockrell School of Engineering degree programs, Major Sequence is a set of courses, normally taken in the last two years of undergraduate study, in which the student learns to put to engineering use, the tools and concepts learned in Basic Sequence. It is important to note that criteria for admission to Major Sequence vary by major, by catalog, and from semester to semester. A student who is currently enrolled in the School must submit an online application by the following priority deadlines for admission to Major Sequence. Applications received by the priority deadline will receive a decision prior to the next registration period. Late applications will be processed in the order they are received.
Application Deadlines
March 1 for admission for the following Summer or Fall
October 1 for admission for the following Spring
No engineering student may register for a course identified as a Major Sequence course in any of the degree plans in the Cockrell School of Engineering unless the student has been admitted to Conditional Major Sequence or full Major Sequence. A student seeking to transfer from another institution must first be admitted to the university by the Office of Admissions. Admission to the university does not imply or guarantee admission to a Major Sequence in the Cockrell School of Engineering. A student's application to Major Sequence is considered only after the student has been admitted to the university. In addition, students applying for internal transfer (change of major) with the Cockrell School of Engineering must be approved for the change of major before their Major Sequence application for the new major will be considered.
Eligibility Requirements
There are four main eligibility requirements to be admitted into Conditional Major Sequence:
- RHE 306 must be completed successfully and posted to UT Austin record PRIOR to applying.
- Students may be eligible for Conditional Major Sequence if they have no more than 7 credit hours of Basic Sequence coursework remaining for the application semester.
- The required Basic Sequence GPA must be achieved and maintained.
- All engineering degree plans require a specified grade point average
(GPA) earned in Basic Sequence courses completed in residence at the
University of Texas at Austin which include a:
2.5 for ASE, BME, CHE, GEH, EE, ME, and PEN
2.0 for ARE and CE - Only courses taken in residence are used in the basic sequence GPA calculation. Correspondence, Extension, Credit By Exam, and Transferred work is credited toward the student's degree, but does not count in the Basic Sequence GPA.
- Students can visit https://utdirect.utexas.edu/engine/ms/msgpa.WBX to view the basic sequence grade point average calculator and calculate their in residence basic sequence grade point average.
- All engineering degree plans require a specified grade point average
(GPA) earned in Basic Sequence courses completed in residence at the
University of Texas at Austin which include a:
- Must have satisfactory academic standing (not on engineering probation
or scholastic probation).
In addition to the Conditional Major Sequence requirements:
- Coursework may be completed at the University of Texas at Austin, equivalently transferred from another institution, or earned through credit by examination.
- Work completed at an institution other than the University of Texas at Austin must appear on the student's official UT Austin transcript prior to submitting the major sequence application.
- All credit by examination for courses in Basic Sequence must be petitioned and posted to the student's record prior to submitting the Major Sequence application. Instructional Assessment and Evaluation, (512) 471-3032.
There are four main eligibility requirements to be admitted into Full Major Sequence:
- All Basic sequence courses must be completed.
- RHE 306 (and E 316K for ECE majors) must be posted to the UT Austin transcript.
- The required Basic Sequence GPA must be achieved.
- 2.5 for ASE, BME, CHE, GEH, EE, ME, and PEN
2.0 for ARE and CE - Only courses taken in residence are used in the basic sequence GPA calculation. Correspondence, Extension, Credit By Exam, and Transferred work is credited toward the student's degree, but does not count in the Basic Sequence GPA.
- Students can visit https://utdirect.utexas.edu/engine/ms/msgpa.WBX to view the basic sequence grade point average calculator and calculate their in residence basic sequence grade point average.
- 2.5 for ASE, BME, CHE, GEH, EE, ME, and PEN
- Must have satisfactory academic standing (not on engineering probation or scholastic probation).
In addition to Full Major Sequence requirements:
- No reapplication is necessary after conditions are met. Students will
automatically receive notification that all conditions have been met and
they will be changed to full Major Sequence status.
Transfer Course Work and Lacking Basic Sequence Courses
If a student has pending transfer coursework or has not claimed credit for a basic sequence course or has not registered for a course they are lacking in basic sequence during the review of major sequence applications; students will be removed from conditional major sequence and placed back in basic sequence. The student will be reinstated to conditional major sequence and their application updated upon the following:
- Transfer coursework has been posted to the UT Austin transcript, or
- The student registers for lacking basic sequence courses by the 12th class day of the current semester, or
- The student claims credit for a basic sequence course he/she is lacking
The student’s schedule will not be altered.
Please note: Conditional major sequence is for students who have less than 7 credit hours of basic sequence coursework remaining for the application semester and need upper level courses to fulfill the 14 hour requirement.
If you have any questions please speak to your Major Sequence Advisor in your Department or reference the Undergraduate Catalog (2008-2010) on pages 151-152 for Admission into Major Sequence.
