Pass/Fail Guidelines

  1. Students must have a total of 30 hours college credit (UT credit, credit by exam, correspondence, or transfer credit) to take a course on a pass/fail basis.
  2. BME, EE, CHE, GEH, and PEN students cannot take any course toward their degree on a pass/fail basis.
  3. ASE, ARE, CE, and ME students can take social science and fine arts/humanities electives on a pass/ fail basis as long as they meet guideline #1.
  4. For all engineering majors, any course that does not count toward the degree or is being taken to remove a deficiency can be taken pass/fail as long as they meet guideline #1.
  5. A student may take no more than one course applicable to the degree program on a pass/fail basis each semester (College of Engineering policy). A student may take no more than two courses a semester on a pass/fail basis (University of Texas policy).
  6. Mathematics 304E and305G, Chemistry 304K, and Physics 306, if taken, must be taken for a letter grade.
  7. Once a grade is assigned as a "CR" at the end of the semester, it cannot be changed later to reflect the actual grade earned.
  8. The approval for pass/fail status assumes that the student will remain in his or her current major. If the student receives approval to take a course pass/fail and later changes majors to one that requires a letter grade, the course that was taken pass/fail may not count as credit toward the new degree.
  9. The basis of registration for a course may not be changed more than once during the 13th class day and the mid-semester deadline.
  10. Students who are pursuing simultaneous majors are responsible for securing the permission of their other college to take a course pass/fail before completing the pass/fail application.
