Summer Programs

 

Summer School in Toulouse, France

A six-week summer program at the Institut National des Sciences Appliques de Toulouse (INSA-Toulouse) will be offered during the summer of 2010. The program will consist of two courses: ME379M Engineering Standards and Industrial Policy in a Global Environment taught by Dr. Janet Ellzey and a French class for beginners. ME379M is accepted as a technical elective in most engineering departments. Check with undergraduate advisor in individual department for verification. Students will live on-campus in dormitories. Classes meet Monday-Thursday. Students pay a program fee, tuition and fees for one 3-hour course in the summer, travel costs, and meals. Program fee includes housing and instructional costs for the second course, insurance, and International SOS. Open to upper division engineering students admitted to major sequence with a minimum GPA of 2.75. Application deadline has been extended to Feb 15th; Program dates are approximately the beginning of June to the beginning of July. Estimated program fee is approximately $3500 and will be finalized in September, 2009. Financial Aid is available. If you are interested in this program, please fill out a pre-application. Summer School in Cordoba, Argentina

A six-week summer program taught at Cuidad Universitaria in Cordoba Argentina will be offered during the summer of 2010.  Students will take one Engineering course as well as choose from a variety of courses offered in Cordoba. The Engineering course is ASE211/ME218/CE311K- Scientific Computing and Numerical analysis with Applications. This course is taught by Professor Ocampo of Aerospace Engineering. . If students have the prerequisite courses, they may stay for the second summer session and take upper division Spanish courses. This program is a great opportunity for students who want to obtain a minor in Spanish. For additional information about Cordoba, please visit the UT Study Abroad website. Application priority deadline has been extended to Feb 15th; Program dates are from the end of may to the beginning of July. The program fee will be determined mid September. Summer in Santander, Spain

A six-week summer program taught in Santander, Spain will be offered during the summer of 2010. Students will take one Engineering course as well as choose from a variety of Spanish courses offered in Santander. The Engineering course is 333T- Engineering Communications. This course is taught by Professor Moore of Mechanical Engienering. The engineering course is offered in the first summer session. If students have the prerequisite courses, they may stay for the second summer session and take upper division Spanish courses. This program is a great opportunity for students who want to obtain a minor in Spanish. For additional information about Santander, please visit the UT Study Abroad Office website. Application deadline is Feb. 15th; Program dates are the end of May through the begining of July. The program fee will be finalized in mid September. Financial Aid is available. Summer in Ankara, Turkey

Fuel Cell Fundamentals, A Summer Course for Engineering Exchange Students (http://www.me.metu.edu.tr/exchange/): The course is hosted by Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara, Turkey, and co-sponsored by The International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies (ICHET) in Istanbul, Turkey, an international research lab under the auspices of the United Nation Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).  The class is structured to give students a clear understanding of the fundamental operating principles of a fuel cell, and how a single fuel cell is integrated into a larger fuel cell stack and fuel cell system.  The class includes a field trip to ICHET for a series of lectures by their researchers and hands-on experience in their labs.  The class is designed for 15 exchange and 15 METU students and will give students experience working in a global engineering environment.  All students will receive a partial scholarship from ICHET. The priority deadline to appy is December 1st and the final deadline to apply for this program is Feb 15th. Financial Aid is available. ENAC Toulouse, France for ASE

Aerospace Engineering students can participate in a unique program offered by various Aerospace engineering universities in France. Students spend 6 weeks taking classes in Toulouse and Poitiers. Students should review the program website for more information. Students pay the French university a 2500 Euro program fee and UT a $400 fee for six ASE credits. The program is taught in English, with students from all over the US and Europe. The final dealine to apply is December 1st.

Maymester in Cambridge, England

Dr. Diller from Biomedical Engineering teaches a four-week course in Cambridge, England. The course is BME 353 Transport Phenomena in Living Systems and is open to BME majors as well as other majors with department and professor approval. This is a popular program where students live in Cambridge, ride bikes to class and experience the culture. Students who are interested should fill out a pre-application. This program is no longer accepting applications for 2009.

Non-engineering Summer programs

There are Summer programs that are available through other colleges that students may still be interested in. Examples of these programs are Anthropology in Rio De Janeiro and Art in Tuscany. Please see the Study Abroad Office Summer website for more information on these programs.

Summer School in London, England (will resume in 2011)

A six-week summer program at the University College of London (UCL) will be offered during the summer of 2009. The program consists of two courses: The Engineering course counts as a fine arts elective or a technical elective for ARE students and a social science course taught by a UCL faculty member. The engineering course is taught by Professor Brooks of Architectural Engineering. Students will live on-campus in dormitories. Classes meet Monday-Thursday. Students pay a program fee, tuition and fees for one 3-hour course in the summer, travel costs, and meals. Program fee includes housing and instructional costs for second course. Open to engineering students with a minimum GPA of 2.75. Priority deadline has been extended to Feb. 15th. Program dates are approximately mid June to mid July. Estimated program fee is $5000. Financial Aid is available. If you are interested in this program, please fill out a pre-application. Your application will be screened and you will be informed when you can apply to the program. UT Study Abroad Office

Students who are interested in studying abroad in countries that the IEE does not have programs with can still go abroad. You will have to go through the UT Study Abroad Office to go abroad. If you would like to take engineering credit, you are responsible for working with your faculty advisor. The Study Abroad Office offers programs for a semester, maymester, summer or year.

Engineering Projects for Underserved Communities

The Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering are offering a two course sequence for students to work on international and domestic projects that will directly benefit underserved communities. The first course will be offered in the fall semester of 2009 and is open to all majors. Projects will be multidisciplinary including mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical and biomedical engineering. Projects are currently being pursued in Texas, Panama and Ghana.
