Matt Ralls was elected president, chief executive officer and a director of Rowan Companies Inc., an international offshore drilling company, in January 2009. Matt was chief operating officer of GlobalSantaFe Corp. from 2005 until it was acquired by Transocean Corp. in November 2007. Prior to that, he served as senior vice president and chief financial officer of GlobalSantaFe and its predecessor Global Marine, which he joined in 1997. Matt also held senior financial positions at two publicly held oil and gas companies from 1990–97, and was in commercial banking from 1973–90.

Matt is a member of the boards of two publicly traded companies, Cabot Oil & Gas and Superior Energy Services. He is also a member of the board of the American Petroleum Institute and is chairman of the executive committee and immediate past chairman of the International Association of Drilling Contractors.

Matt grew up in San Antonio, Texas, and attended The University of Texas at Austin, where he received a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1971 and an MBA in 1973. Matt and his wife, Amy, reside in Austin, Texas, where three of his four children and his six grandchildren also live. His youngest son will begin work on his MBA this fall.
