Randall W. Poston, Ph.D., P.E., S.E., is a structural engineer and a founding partner of the consulting engineering firm Pivot Engineers in Austin.

Poston says that if he has had success, by whatever measure, it is directly attributable to his undergraduate education at the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin and his graduate training at the school’s Phil M. Ferguson Structural Engineering Laboratory. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering in 1978 and 1980, respectively. Poston’s proudest accomplishment in engineering is having received his Ph.D. in 1984 at UT Austin. Poston has served on the External Advisory Committee for the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAEE), and in 2008, he was elected to the CAEE Academy of Distinguished Alumni.

Poston has executed numerous notable projects, including the repair and seismic strengthening of the Marina del Rey seawall in Los Angeles, which was originally constructed in the late 1950s. By repairing the seawall instead of replacing it, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works achieved $200 million in savings.

For the past six years he has chaired American Concrete Institute (ACI) Committee 318, which is responsible for the first comprehensive reorganization of building codes for structural concrete in 45 years. For his work leading the effort, ACI recognized Poston with the 2014 ACI Henry L. Kennedy Award. Poston has received numerous other awards for technical publications and service, and he has authored more than 100 nationally and internationally recognized publications.

His wife, Bonnie, and daughter, Genevieve, are graduates of UT Austin’s College of Natural Sciences, and his daughter, Emily, is studying civil engineering at the Cockrell School.
