Samuel G. Dawson is chief executive officer of Pape-Dawson Engineers Inc. Under Dawson’s guidance, the San Antonio-based civil engineering firm, which Dawson’s father co-founded in 1965, has grown into one of the largest and most respected firms in Texas, with offices in Austin, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Fort Worth.

Dawson received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 1983.

Throughout his career, Dawson has made a mark on Texas and education. Most recently, for his contributions to engineering education and the engineering program at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), the UTSA engineering college created the Samuel G. Dawson College of Engineering Endowed Scholarship.In 2013, he was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Alumni for the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering in the Cockrell School of Engineering. Also in 2013, he was inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and received the Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award from UTSA. In 2012, he was selected as Engineer of the Year for the Bexar Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers.

Dawson’s record also includes hours of volunteer service, which support many professional, charitable and community organizations. He has served as president or chairman of the following: San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, UTSA Engineering Advisory Council, Trinity Baptist Church Deacon Council, Texas Society of Professional Engineers, American Society of Professional Engineers, Professional Engineers in Private Practice, Rotary Club of San Antonio, The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, and the Witte Museum.

Born and raised in San Antonio, he was formerly selected by the Texas Society of Professional Engineers as the State Young Engineer of the Year and the Bexar Chapter Young Engineer of the Year. In 2009, Junior Achievement inducted the Dawson family into the San Antonio Business Hall of Fame.

Dawson has been a member of the Cockrell School’s Engineering Advisory Board since 2003. In 2012, he was appointed chair and served for four years in this role.

Dawson and his wife, Laura, are active in their church and in serving the community together. They live in San Antonio with their two children, Taylor and Kendall.
