John Weinzierl earned a bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering in 1990 and a master's degree in business administration in 1998 from the university. During his time at UT Austin he earned a place on the engineering dean's list, became a business school Sord Scholar, received the business school's Dean's Award for Academic Excellence, and was elected to Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma scholastic honor societies.

In 1999, John joined Natural Gas Partners (NGP), a private equity firm in the energy industry. He has been involved in its critical decisions on reviewing and executing investments in oil and gas production, natural gas gathering and oil field service companies. He rose to his current position as managing director in 2005.

A registered professional engineer in Texas, John concentrates on the company's transaction analysis and execution, and on supporting its active-portfolio companies with such needs as corporate strategy and investment analysis. In addition to involvement with NGP's oil & gas producers, John applies expertise to overseeing portfolio companies that operate in the natural gas gathering, processing and transmission business.

Before joining NGP, he was a petroleum engineer at Conoco Inc. for almost six years, working in drilling and completions. His responsibilities increased with time to involve global travel. He spent time in the Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Norway, designing and supervising drilling and completion operations. John also helped develop an oil field near the Arctic Circle. His project teams received company commendations for engineering excellence, and set cost and efficiency records.

He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and other oil and gas industry groups. John and his family support charities that include Habitat for Humanity and the community outreach program of the Junior League of Dallas.

John is a long-standing Friend of Alec and a Life Member of the Texas Exes. He lives in Dallas with his wife, Kelli, an attorney, and their 2-year-old son, Luke.
