Founder, Executive Director and CEO, MTX

Gabe Muoneke is the founder, executive director and CEO of MTX, an energy company based in Nigeria. Muoneke directs and executes the company’s technical and managerial strategy and secures financing for sustainable and economically viable energy projects in Africa.

Muoneke grew up in Houston in an Igbo/Nigerian community. He came to The University of Texas at Austin on a basketball scholarship and dreamed of one day owning his own oil company in Nigeria. He was a four-year starter on the Longhorn men’s basketball team and ranks in the top 15 in scoring and rebounding in university history.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering from the Cockrell School of Engineering in 2002, he was invited to the NBA pre-draft rookie combine. He was a first-round pick of the Columbus Riverdragons of the NBA Development League and played for several U.S. and international teams during his nine-year professional basketball career. In 2003, Muoneke won a silver medal in the All-Africa Games and, in 2006, he won a bronze medal. He became captain of the Nigeria National Basketball Team in 2007.

In 2009, he retired from professional sports and joined Afren, a United Kingdom-based operator, as a petroleum engineer. There, he led the development of the largest mobile offshore production unit in the history of Nigeria’s marginal fields. He also implemented electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) for the development of heavy crude reservoirs in Nigeria, the first time this technique was implemented in the country. He later founded MTX, which he hopes to develop into an African integrated oil company.

Muoneke currently resides in Houston with his wife Lenea, their daughters Bianna and Ari and their sons Dubem and Nnazi. He speaks seven languages and is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu brown belt. He is currently writing his dissertation to complete a master’s degree in oil and gas project management at the University of Liverpool.
