The College of Engineering is pleased to release the third issue of Engineering @ Texas, an e-newsletter intended to keep alumni and friends of the UT College of Engineering informed about programs, students, faculty, research and alumni at the College.

UT Engineering programs again ranked top ten in the country
In the annual rankings of academic quality by U.S. News and World Report, the Engineering graduate program moved up to ninth in the nation among 330 accredited engineering schools, and fifth among the public institutions.

UT Austin College of Engineering honors two outstanding young engineering graduates
An Alaska-based petroleum engineer and a Houston semiconductor executive were honored as Outstanding Young Engineering Graduates at The University of Texas at Austin College of Engineering May 16 commencement ceremony. Eric R. Davis, P.E. (B.S.P.E. 1991, M.S.P.E. 1993) and Duy Loan Le, P.E. (B.S.E.E. 1982) received the 2003 award, which is bestowed on individuals age 40 and under for distinguished contributions in the realms of professional accomplishment, community service, and service to the UT Austin College of Engineering.

Image-enhancing tool could improve cancer diagnosis and treatment
An image-enhancing tool which could lead to both earlier diagnosis and improvements in monitoring treatment of cancers has been developed by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin College of Engineering and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Cancer Research reported in its May 1st issue.

Former General Foods CEO and Distinguished Graduate Tex Cook dies
Chauncey William Wallace (Tex) Cook, who earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from UT Austin in 1930 and was named a Distinguished Graduate of the College of Engineering in 1965, died at the age of 93 in Austin May 19. "The College owes a great debt of gratitude to Tex Cook, who, in 1980 as a member of the Engineering Foundation Advisory Council, was the first individual to establish a faculty endowment in the College of Engineering," noted Ben Streetman, dean of the College of Engineering. "We pay tribute to Tex whose leadership in establishing an endowed professorship resulted over the next 22 years in motivating the creation of an unparalleled 180 chairs, professors and faculty fellowships within our College by other donors."

Women in Engineering Program marks 10th Anniversary with Banquet, Reunion
The mood was festive when some 230 current engineering students, alumnae, faculty, industry representatives, family and friends gathered at the Omni Hotel Downtown on April 25 to celebrate ten years of UT Austin's Women in Engineering Program (WEP). The decade marked imposing gains in the College's thrust to recruit and retain female students through creative educational, mentoring and outreach activities. Women's enrollment improved from 16% to 22% in the College over this period.

State grant electrifies classes with aim to keep students interested until graduation
When the Texas Engineering and Technical Consortium (TETC) was born by act of the 77th Texas Legislature, Dr. Tony Ambler, electrical and computer engineering department chair, recognized an opportunity. TETC - a hybrid of public higher learning institutions and private corporations - brings together state and matching private funds in an initiative to address Texas' dramatically shrinking supply of engineering graduates over the past decade.

Get a Masters in Circuit Design in two years while you work
Sign up now for the Electrical & Computer Engineering department's new masters degree program in Circuit Design. This program was initiated at the request of industry to provide a more focused curriculum covering both analog and digital design. Beginning in January 2004, this masters degree will also be offered in "Option 3" format. Classes will be provided on one weekend (Fri/Sat) per month for two years.

A call for volunteers for WE @ UT lunch with an engineer
The Women in Engineering Program (WEP) at The University of Texas at Austin is looking for volunteers to help in their quest to attract more young women to studies and careers in math, science and engineering. WEP is looking for engineering alumni to come to UT's campus to have lunch with up to five WE @ UT participants on Thursday, July 24, 2003 from 12:00 - 1:30 pm. This opportunity provides WE @ UT participants with a first-hand glimpse into the life of an engineer.
