BME 377 MOVIE

Welcome to the site for the 2004 Summer Undergraduate Clinical Research Program!

The courses:

BME 377P: Clinical Research Internship
Students perform clinical research with biomedical engineering or medical faculty at the Texas Medical Center in Houston. Requires a substantial final report. The equivalent of three lecture hours a week for one semester.
BME 377Q: Clinical Medical Internship
Students participate in clinical inpatient rounds, outpatient visits, operating room procedures, and medical grand rounds. Designed to provide direct contact with the medical needs addressed by biomedical engineering. Requires a substantial final report. The equivalent of
three lecture hours a week for one semester.

Our mission:

Clinical Internships in the Texas Medical Center
The Clinical Internship is aimed at exposing University of Texas Department of Biomedical Engineering students to the medical environment in active clinical practices at the Texas Medical Center. Students will gain an appreciation for the interdisciplinary nature of patient care, learn how to interact with patients and medical staff, learn clinical etiquette, and experience the dynamics of operating room procedures. A pilot program is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2004.

Research Internships in the Texas Medical Center
The Research Internship is aimed at exposing University of Texas Department of Biomedical Engineering students to problem solving in active research laboratories at the Texas Medical Center that are addressing critical medical problems. Students will gain the ability to acquire measurements and statistically interpret data in living systems (e.g., patients in clinic or operating room, animals in AAALAC accredited facilities), the ability to understand regulatory issues and biomedical ethics (e.g., animal care and use, institutional review board, patents), the ability to identify, formulate, and solve biomedical engineering problems. A pilot program is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2004.

Our program:

The program is an intensive 10-week internship at the UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the UT Health Science Center in Houston, Texas. This program is for juniors and highly qualified sophomores who are biomedical engineering majors at UT-Austin. The program is designed to provide biomedical engineering undergraduates with first-hand experience in clinical medicine and interdisciplinary research. Under direct supervision of faculty mentors, students will participate in a rigorous program that includes a daily clinical medical rotation, laboratory research, lectures, and leadership training. During the course of the program the students will write a research plan, conduct biomedical research, write an abstract, and present their results.

Students will be engaged in learning about:

  • Clinical medicine
  • Clinical research
  • Laboratory research ethics
  • Communication and leadership skills

Students will participate in clinical rotations that include:

  • General surgery
  • Pediatrics
  • Labor and Delivery
  • Emergency room
  • Intensive Care Unit
  • Internal Medicine
