Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Biomedical Engineering is:

To develop clinically translatable solutions for human health by training the next generation of Biomedical Engineers, cultivating leaders, and nurturing the integration of science, engineering, and medicine in a discover-centered environment.

Our vision states that:

We will be the premier Biomedical Engineering platform in the world, based on the excellence of our people, our innovative multidisciplinary and enabling research, and our discovery-centered educational programs. We will pioneer the transfer of BME research into applications that will advance and improve health care throughout Texas and the world.

Biomedical Engineering has been a graduate program within the Cockrell School of Engineering since 1969. Since that time, numerous PhD and MS students have gone on to take positions within academic institutions and in industry. In Fall 2001, BME became a full academic department and now offers degrees at both the graduate and undergraduate level. The expansion of this program has allowed students and faculty to work together extensively to build interdisciplinary knowledge in the areas of medicine, molecular and cellular biology, and engineering.

In order to support the goals of the department, new staff and faculty have been recruited and construction of a new building at UT Austin will be completed in summer 2008. Seven new faculty members joined the department and have enhanced the breadth of research already taking place in numerous research labs across the UT Austin campus and the Texas Medical Center in Houston. In addition, these new faculty members support undergraduate education by teaching courses in a diverse undergraduate curriculum.
