Peter Rossky wins Joel Henry Hildebrand Award in the Theoretical Experimental Chemistry of Liquid

Professor Peter Rossky will be given the Joel Henry Heldebrand Award in the Theoretical & Experimental Chemistry of Liquids for his ground breaking theoretical work on liquids. Jennifer Maynard Garners the Grand Challenge Award

A vaccine under development by assistant professor Jennifer Maynard received a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Grand Challenge Award.

Her project was one of 76 winning awards out of the 3,000 proposals submitted. All awards were selected for their unconventional approach in fighting infectious diseases. You can learn more about this award here>

 

 

 

David Allen Receives 2009 AIChE Sustainable Engineering Forum Award

Professor David Allen has been selected the 2009 winner of the AIChE Sustainable Engineering Forum Award. This award was given in recognition of Dr. Allen's outstanding research and teaching achievements in the field of sustainable engineering, including his textbook Green Engineering: Environmentally Conscious Design of Chemical Processes

 

 

Grant Willson Awarded the 2009 Gordon E. Moore Medal

Professor Grant Willson will be awarded the 2009 Gordon E. Moore Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Solid State Science and Technology at the 215th Electrochemical Society Meeting in San Francisco, CA. The award is in recognition of his outstanding work on microelectronic materials processing.

He will be giving the Gordon E. Moore Medal Award Lecture: "High Resolution Imaging Technology: A View of the Future" at the ECS meeting at the end of this month.

Tom Edgar Receives Malcolm E. Pruitt Award

Professor Tom Edgar has been awarded the 2009 Malcolm E. Pruitt Award of the Council for Chemical Research (CCR). The award is in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the progress of research in chemistry and chemical engineering by fostering interaction between academia and industry. Benny Freeman Garners the AIChE Industrial Gases, IBM Faculty, and ACS Applied Polymer Science Awards

Professor Benny Freeman received the 2008 Award for Excellence in Industrial Gases Technology for his work on gas separations using membranes. Freeman was recognized for a number of contributions to his field. For example, In contrast to the traditional approach of using rigid, glassy polymers for gas separation materials, Professor Freeman's group tuned the molecular structure of polar, rubbery polymers to remove CO2 from gas mixtures missed by traditional rigid polymers.

Additionally, Freeman has been selected to receive a 2008 IBM Faculty Award. IBM Faculty Awards are internationally competitive awards, awarded to university faculty who have and outstanding reputation for contributions to their field. More>

Moreover, for his pioneering polymer science research Prof. Freeman has been rewarded the 2009 ACS Award in Applied Polymer Science. More>

 

Isaac Sanchez Receives AIChE Service Award

Professor Isaac Sanchez has been selected as recipient of the 2009 Award for Service to Society. The award is given to recognize Dr. Sanchez's tireless work for Foundation for the Homeless as both a volunteer and a board member. He will receive the award at the Institute's Honors Ceremony, held during AIChE's 2009 Annual Meeting in the fall.

Hal Alper Wins the Dreyfus Foundation New Faculty Award and Texas Exes Teaching Award

Professor Hal Alper has won the national 2008 Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation New Faculty Award. This $50,000 award supports faculty at the beginning of their first tenure-track appointment who demonstrate the potential to produce an independent body of scientific scholarship of outstanding quality and will make significant contributions to education in the chemical sciences.More>

In addition, Professor Alper has been selected as the only Cockrell School of Engineering faculty member to receive the 2008 Texas Exes Teaching Award. This honor is particularly special as it is determined solely by students. Even more remarkable, Professor Alper is only just completing his first semester in our department.

 

 

Brian Korgel Awarded Roy-Somiya Medal

Professor Brian Korgel has received the Roy-Somiya Medal of the International Solvothermal and Hydrothermal Association. It is named after the two patrons of this society. This is the first award from ISHA given to a Young Scientist in the age group below 45 years. The Roy-Somiya Medal will be presented to Brian along with a citation at the ISHA-2008 Conference was held in Nottingham, UK during Sept. 08-10, 2008. More>

In addition, Prof. Korgel has been awarded the 2009 Edith and Peter O'Donnell Award at the annual meeting of The Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas (TAMEST).

 

 

Tom Truskett Gives 2009 Dudley A. Saville Lecture

Christine Schmidt Receives Columbus Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce

The Award recognizes a single inventor for the successful application of research in chemistry and/or chemical engineering that contributes to the material prosperity and happiness of people. John McKetta Named as One of the the 50 "Foundational" Chemical Engineers

Professor John McKetta has been named one the 50 chemical engineers of the Foundation Age of our profession by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). This recognition is for John's many achievements and contributions to our field including his work on energy conservation and environmental protection, his 69 volume Encyclopedia of Chemical Processing and Design, and his service as President of AIChE in 1962.
This significant recognition is part of the AIChE centennial year, which will culminate at the Institutes annual meeting this November in Philadelphia, where AIChE was founded. You can learn more about this honor and other awardees here.

 

Undergrad ChEs win Regional AIChE Student Paper Contest

Barbara Ekerdt was selected the as the 1st place winner at the Student Paper Contest at the AIChE Regional Conference held in Austin, Texas. Barbara's work on biodegradable sensors for extremely sensitive pH detection will be presented at the National Student Paper Competition tat will take place at the Annual AIChE meeting in Nashville, Tennessee in November 2009.
Alper Konuk was the 2nd place winner for his work on advanced biosensors for analyte detection. Both students are undergraduate researchers for Dr. Nicholas Peppas.

Tom Edison selected as Best Professor in Chemical Engineering

Dr. Tom EdisonDr. Tom Edison has been selected by the Student Engineering Council as the Best Professor in Chemical Engineering during E-week. This is a wonderful achievement and an especially nice recognition since it comes from the students.

 

 

 

Dr. Kelly McQueary receives University of Texas Outstanding Staff Service Award

Dr. Kelly McQuearyDr. Kelly McQueary, Academic Adviser II and the Chemical Engineering Department's Undergraduate Coordinator, has been named a recipient of a University of Texas Outstanding staff Service Award. This is in recognition of her excellent work with advising ChE undergraduates and her work on student leadership development in the Cockrell School of Engineering.
