Undergraduate Academic Advising in Chemical Engineering

OVERVIEW
Advising resources are provided to undergraduate chemical engineering students to assist them in planning their degree program at the University. These resources include faculty advisors, the ChE Undergraduate Office (UGO), and the ChE Undergraduate Faculty Advisor.

FACULTY ADVISORS
All ChE undergraduate students are assigned a faculty advisor and are required to see their advisors prior to registering for classes each semester. Students may have more than one faculty advisor during their time at UT, but every effort is made to keep students with the same faculty advisor so that they can build mentoring relationships.

During visits with their faculty advisor students discuss their career plans and get the faculty advisor’s input on specific courses that will help them reach their goals. Faculty advisors often offer guidance regarding summer internships, undergraduate research experiences or other opportunities that will assist students in their development as professional chemical engineers.

UNDERGRADUATE OFFICE
The Undergraduate ChE Office, located in CPE 2.706, is a full-service undergraduate studies office committed to providing services that contribute to ChE students having outstanding undergraduate experiences. The UGO is a resource for information about degree requirements, course prerequisites and University and Cockrell School of Engineering policies and procedures. Course substitutions, degree audits, less than 14 hours petitions, Major Sequence applications and repetition of course petitions are also managed in the UGO.

UNDERGRADUATE ADVISOR
The Undergraduate Faculty Advisor is a ChE faculty member who meets with students regarding issues such as exceptions to policy or study abroad course equivalencies. Contact the Undergraduate Office for assistance.

SUMMER & FALL 2009 ADVISING AND REGISTRATION PROCEDURES

Chemical engineering faculty advising for Summer and Fall 2009 registration is April 8 through April 17 (except April 11-12).  Be sure to check your assigned faculty advisor’s schedule as soon as possible because faculty advisors’ schedules vary widely.

NOTE: You will receive an email from the Cockrell School of Engineering about the official Summer and Fall 2009 Registration advising period. The dates for the official University advising period are April 15 through April 24 (except April 18-19). ChE faculty advising is earlier so that all faculty advising is completed prior to the start of registration on April 20.

Follow these steps to register for classes:

  1. Check your registration times.
  2. Run a Degree Audit and review it.
  3. Look at the Suggested Arrangement of Courses to determine what you need to take.
  4. Look at the Course Schedule to work out a schedule based on what you need to take.
  5. Click here to identify your assigned faculty advisor or check the list posted in the glass case outside the Undergraduate Office in CPE 2.706. If you are not on the list, either drop by the Undergraduate Office or send an email to Kelly McQueary, and request a faculty advisor assignment. Be sure to include your UT eid in the email.
  6. Click here to sign up for an appointment with your faculty advisor. Click on your advisor’s name and choose one appointment slot that works for you. If your advisor does not have any hours posted check back periodically for updates. Do not wait until the last week of advising to make an appointment because some advisors may have already concluded advising. If you do not get advised during faculty advising (April 8 through April 17 (except April 11-12)) you will be barred from registration.
  7. Print an advising bar release form and fill it out prior to your advising appointment. Be sure to fill out the form completely and list the courses you have taken that fulfill the degree requirements listed. Doing so will make for a more effective advising session with your faculty advisor and it will help the Undergraduate Office advisors keep track of your progress toward your degree.  If you arrive to your advising appointment with the form blank your faculty advisor may require that you reschedule your appointment.
  8. Immediately after your appointment, bring your advising folder to the Undergraduate Office in CPE 2.706 to get your advising bar lifted.
