We
Welcome Transfer Students
The Department of Chemical Engineering typically admits 130-140 first-time
in college students (freshmen) into its program each year. The overwhelming
majority begin in the fall semester. For more than four years our undergraduate
enrollment has been steady and we have graduated between 120 and 130 students
with a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree annually. Close to half of these
BS graduates did not enroll as a Chemical Engineering major in UT their
first semester in college. Students who are currently enrolled in another
major in UT may apply to transfer (internal transfers) to Chemical Engineering
as well as students from other institutions (external transfers).
Internal transfers are handled by the College of Engineering in consultation
with the Department and external transfers are handled
by the UT Office of Admissions. All transfers are based
on the applicant’s
academic record and available space. The number of transfers
admitted depends on the number applying and to some extent
on the number of students graduating
or electing to transfer out of Chemical Engineering. Hence,
the criteria for transfer will vary from semester to semester.
For information regarding
an internal transfer, contact the Office of Student Affairs
in the College of Engineering by calling (512) 471-4321
or visit the Change
of Major web page. For information regarding external
transfer, visit the UT
Office of Admissions website.
The curriculum quickly evolves from general chemistry, mathematics,
physics, and education to specialized chemistry and chemical engineering
courses. By the third year the majority of one’s classes are in
chemical engineering topics. For this reason, it is best to plan your
application to transfer into the Department as early as possible. Most
students find it advantageous to apply to transfer in the semester they
complete the equivalent sequences in calculus (M 408C & M 408D), chemistry
(CH 301, CH 302, CH 204L, CH 618A, & CH 118K), English (RHE 306 & E
316K), and physics (PHY 303K, PHY 303L, PHY 103M, & PHY 103N).
