Setting Up Outlook 2003 for Off Campus Access without VPN

Because of the recent viruses and Windows exploits the campus and many Internet Service Providers have been blocking RPC over TCP/IP traffic. To connect to Exchange, from off campus, you can configure Outlook 2003 to use RPC over HTTPS.   RPC over HTTPS provides a secure/encrypted connection between your Outlook 2003 client and the School's
Exchange server.

What are the requirements?

Outlook Configuration

  1. Connect to the campus with VPN (This is only needed for the configuration.)
  2. If this is your first time to configure Outlook against the Exchange Server, please following instructions, Setting Up Outlook 2003, and then continue from here.
  3. For those using XP Professional: Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, and then Mail.  For those using XP Home: Click Start, Control Panel, User Accounts, and then Mail
  4. Click on Email Accounts...

  1. Select "View or change existing e-mail accounts”, then Next.

  1. Select Microsoft Exchange Server and Change.

  1. Select More Settings

  1. Go to the Connection tab.
  2. Select Connect me to Exchange mailbox using HTTP.  (Note: if this section is grayed out, you will need to apply Windows XP SP2)
  3. Click on Exchange Proxy Settings.

  1. Type mail.engr.utexas.edu in the HTTPS line.
  2. Check Connect using SSL only
  3. Check Mutually authenticate the session...
  4. Enter msstd:mail.engr.utexas.edu in the line for Principle name for proxy server line.
  5. If your computer is always off campus, select On fast networks.
  6. Select On slow networks.
  7. Select NTLM Authentication in the menu box, Use this Authentication when connecting to proxy server.
  8. Click OK, and select OK until Finish.
  9. Disconnect your VPN session.  The next time you start Outlook.  It will be using the RPC over HTTP protocol and you will not need VPN.
