Because of the recent viruses and Windows exploits the campus and many
Internet Service Providers have been blocking RPC over TCP/IP traffic. To
connect to Exchange, from off campus, you can configure Outlook 2003 to use RPC
over HTTPS. RPC over HTTPS provides a secure/encrypted connection
between your Outlook 2003 client and the School's
Exchange server.
What are the requirements?
- You must have a Cockrell School of Engineering Exchange mailbox.
- Windows XP with SP2
- Outlook 2003
- The first time you configure these settings, you will have to be on campus, or use VPN. After that you will no longer need VPN.
Outlook Configuration
- Connect to the campus with VPN (This is only needed for the configuration.)
- If this is your first time to configure Outlook against the Exchange Server, please following instructions, Setting Up Outlook 2003, and then continue from here.
- For those using XP Professional: Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, and then Mail. For those using XP Home: Click Start, Control Panel, User Accounts, and then Mail”
- Click on Email Accounts...

- Select "View or change existing e-mail accounts”, then Next.

- Select Microsoft Exchange Server and Change.

- Select More Settings

- Go to the Connection tab.
- Select Connect me to Exchange mailbox using HTTP. (Note: if this section is grayed out, you will need to apply Windows XP SP2)
- Click on Exchange Proxy Settings.

- Type mail.engr.utexas.edu in the HTTPS line.
- Check Connect using SSL only
- Check Mutually authenticate the session...
- Enter msstd:mail.engr.utexas.edu in the line for Principle name for proxy server line.
- If your computer is always off campus, select On fast networks.
- Select On slow networks.
- Select NTLM Authentication in the menu box, Use this Authentication when connecting to proxy server.
- Click OK, and select OK until Finish.
- Disconnect your VPN session. The next time you start Outlook. It will be using the RPC over HTTP protocol and you will not need VPN.
