Minimum Requirements

To access the Cockrell School of Engineering file server via SFTP you must have:

  1. An enabled ENGR domain account
  2. The account must be enabled for SFTP access
        - enable my account for access to Faculty/Staff directories on the file server
        - enable my account for access to my student home directory

note: You must have a high assurance EID to use these pages.  If your EID is not high assurance then submit a request to the ITG Service Desk to have your account enabled for SFTP (specify home or file access)

  3. An SSH/SFTP client -- we recommend using the SSH client available on BevoWare.

Quick Steps

  1. Open SFTP client (note: you must use the File Transfer client software rather than the SSH terminal software)
  2. Connect to the sftp address for your service using your engr account.  Note syntax: engr\<username
        - for web authoring, connect to web-sftp.engr.utexas.edu
        - for Student home directories, connect to home-sftp.engr.utexas.edu
        - for Faculty/Staff directories, connect to file-sftp.engr.utexas.edu
  3. Enter password

Installing the Client

Note: These instructions are based on using the SSH client for WINDOWS available on BevoWare. (Macintosh users should download FUGU.) To obtain the software, visit Bevoware and follow these steps:

  1. Click on Download Now.
  2. Enter your UT EID and password when prompted.
  3. Click on Agree at the bottom of the user agreement page.
  4. Select your Platform on the subsequent page and click Go.
  5. Click on the Utilities link
  6. Click on the Download button next to SSH 3.2.3
  7. Save the file to your desktop
  8. When the application has finished downloading, find SSHSecureShellClient-3[1].2.3.exe and double click on it to start the installation process. Be sure to let it do the default installation

Once the SSH installation is complete, you will have two new icons on your desktop:

  1. SSH Secure Shell Client
  2. SSH Secure File Transfer Client, which looks like a folder icon

Connecting to the server

  1. Open the Secure File Transfer Client. (note: you must use the File Transfer client software rather than the SSH terminal software)
  2. Click on the “Quick Connect” button on the toolbar
    1. Note: You may get an error about not being able to open a file for reading.  Just click “OK” and continue.
    2. Note: you may also set up a profile for future reuse; review the help documentation for the application for instructions on how to do this.
  3. In the Host Name field, enter the appropriate server name listed above under "Quick Steps".
  4. In the User Name field, enter engr\<username>  (you must have engr\ before your username)
  5. Replace <username> with your ENGR Active Directory username
  6. For most non-windows operating systems you must use a forward slash (“/”) after engr rather than a backslash (“\”).
  7. Leave the other fields alone.
  8. Click Connect
    1. The first time you will be prompted "to save the host key to the local database", click “Yes”
  9. Enter your ENGR Active Directory password in the “Enter Password” dialog box
  10. A listing of files and directories will appear. If a toolbar named “profiles” shows up, you can close it out. You may receive an error about not being able to open a terminal session; this is normal and can be ignored (click “OK”).
  11. Use the sftp client to copy, paste, rename and delete files from your local machine disk (left pane) to the file server (right pane).
  12. If you do not have permission for an operation you are attempting, you will receive a message saying "permission denied"

If you have any questions, contact the ITG Service Desk by calling 232-2486 or sending an email to service.desk@engr.utexas.edu.
