Every Cockrell School of Engineering student or UT student taking an Engineering class can obtain 1 GB of file space for personal information. Students should use this server storage instead of storing files on the local hard drive. Local hard drives are not backed up and in some labs all data is lost when the machine is rebooted. Your space is located on a network drive, \\disk.austin.utexas.edu\root\engrstu\<DEPT>\eid, where <DEPT> is your department, e.g. ME, and eid is your personal UT EID.
Files and folders in your home directory are protected by permissions that do not allow others to view the information. Students must enable their EID to access Engineering services.
Department folders are as follows:
- ase - Aerospace Engineering - \\disk.austin.utexas.edu\root\engrstu\ase\<eid>
- bme - Biomedical Engineering - \\disk.austin.utexas.edu\root\engrstu\bme\<eid>
- caee - Civil and Architectural Engineering - \\disk.austin.utexas.edu\root\engrstu\caee\<eid>
- cse - General Engineering - \\disk.austin.utexas.edu\root\engrstu\cse\<eid>
- ece - Electrical and Computer Engineering - \\disk.austin.utexas.edu\root\engrstu\ece\<eid>
- me - Mechanical Engineering - \\disk.austin.utexas.edu\root\engrstu\me\<eid>
- non - Non-Engineering major taking an engineering course - \\disk.austin.utexas.edu\root\engrstu\non\<eid>
- pge - Petroleum Engineering - \\disk.austin.utexas.edu\root\engrstu\pge\<eid>
Accessing Your File Space
Your home directory is available remotely by path, mapping the drive, SFTP (Secure FTP) and Webdav.
Windows
In Engineering Labs in the Austin Domain
Your Desktop and "My Documents" will be stored on the your home directory space, \\disk.austin.utexas.edu\root\engrstu\<dept>\eid. You can also access your home directory by doing the following:
- Select Start > Run
- Enter the UNC path of your folder, \\disk.austin.utexas.edu\root\engrstu\yourDept\yourEID.
Quick Access
- If you are ON-CAMPUS on a machine NOT in the Austin domain you will first have to install the IPSEC certificate from bevoware, please see the following instructions for more information.
- If you are OFF-CAMPUS, connect with VPN (Learn more about VPN.)
- Select Start > Run
- Enter the UNC path of your folder, \\disk.austin.utexas.edu\root\engrstu\yourDept\yourEID
- A window will popup asking for your username and password. Use your UT-EID and password. Prepend your EID with "austin.utexas.edu\". For example, austin.utexas.edu\xyz123
- Note: You can also create this as a shortcut on your desktop (right-click on the desktop, New->Shortcut).
Mapping a drive
- If you are ON-CAMPUS on a machine NOT in the Austin domain you will first have to install the IPSEC certificate from bevoware, please see the following instructions for more information.
- If you are OFF-CAMPUS, connect with VPN (Learn more about VPN.)
- Right-click on "My Computer".
- Select "Map Network Drive." Left-click on it.
- In the box labeled "Path:" type \\disk.austin.utexas.edu\root\engrstu\yourDept\yourEID.
- You will be asked for a username and password. In the username box type austin.utexas.edu\yourEID and in the password box type your EID password.
Using Secure FTP (SFTP)
- Download SSH Secure Shell at no cost from BevoWare.
- Select Start, then All Programs. Select SSH Secure Shell, then Secure File Transfer Client.
- Select Quick Connect.
- In the Host name field, enter sftp.austin.utexas.edu.
- In the User name field, enter your UT EID.
- In the Port number field, enter 22.
- In the Authentication Method field, select password.
- Select Connect.
- If you are prompted to save a new host key to local database, answer Yes.
- Enter your UT EID password at the prompt.
- Once you have connected browse to "DepartmentalDirectories/engrstu/yourDept" (Do NOT go to the top-level folder named with your EID).
For more information, please see the campus SFTP page.
Webdav
- Open Internet Explorer
- From the File menu, select Open. If you are using Internet Explorer 7, press ALT to display the menu bar. You can display the menus permanently by clicking the Tools button and selecting Menu Bar.
- In the Open field, enter the following URL,
with your UT EID at the end of the line:
https://webdav.austin.utexas.edu/engrstu/yourDept/yourEID - Select the checkbox labeled Open as Web Folder, then click OK.
- When prompted for your user name and password, enter your UT EID and password.
- Click OK.
The disk share containing your files opens in "folder view" inside Internet Explorer. You can work with files in this view just as you would with a mapped drive. (For example, you can drag-and-drop files from one location to another.) - When you have finished working with your files, you must exit from your browser, closing all browser windows. That terminates the connection in a way that prevents other people from getting access to your files.
Mac
Webdav
- Go > Connect to Server
- Enter: https://webdav.austin.utexas.edu/engrstu/yourDept/yourEID
For example, https://webdav.austin.utexas.edu/engrstu/ME/abc123
Using Secure FTP (SFTP)
- Please consult the campus web pages on how to connect via Secure FTP by using the Fetch program.
- Once connected to get to your storage, navigate to: departmentaldirectories/engrstu/yourDept/yourEID
> For more information please consult the campus web pages for Austin Disk.
Disk Quotas: 1 GB
If you reach your 1 GB quota, you will get an error message indicating that you do not have permissions to write or "disk is read only". You will need to remove files to get back within your quota.
To check your home directory size, highlight everything under \\disk.austin.utexas.edu\root\engrstu\yourDept\yourEID folder in the Windows Explorer (Ctrl-A) and then simultaneously press Alt-Enter. You will see the total amount of space used on the drive. If it's at or greater than 1 GB, then the system won't let you save anything until you bring that down below 1 GB.
Backup & Restore
The Austin Disk File Server is backed up in case of catastrophic failure. In the event of accidental or unexpected data loss you can restore a file or folder that has been deleted or a previous version of a file that has become corrupt. Please see File Restore for details.
