Student File Services

Every Cockrell School of Engineering student that has an ENGR account or is using the Engineering Studio Classroom 2 (ECJ 3.402) has file space on the CSOE Fileserver (named Home) for personal information. Students should use this server storage instead of storing files on the local hard drive.  Local hard drives are not backed up and in some labs all data is lost when the machine is rebooted.

Your directory will have the same name as your user logon name (generally, this will be the same as your UT-EID). Files and folders in your home directory are protected by permissions that do not allow others to view the information.

Accessing Your File Space

In An ENGR Lab

Your home directory will be automatically mapped as your Z: drive when you logon to a machine that is in the ENGR Active Directory Domain. To access your directory, double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop. Then double click on "yourusername on file (Z)" where yourusername is the name of your home directory (for most of you, this username will match your UT-EID).

Remote Access

Your home directory is available remotely by UNC path and mapping the drive. Please note that access by UNC path or mapping a drive from off campus requires VPN (Virtual Private Network). When using VPN, you will be required to enter the domain and username in the format austin.utexas.edu\eid rather than austin\eid. Learn more about VPN. You may also access your home directory via SFTP. Please consult our SFTP page for more detailed instructions.

Quick Access to Storage

  1. Select Start > Run
  2. Enter the UNC path of your folder, \\home.engr.utexas.edu\users\yourUsername
  3. A window will popup asking for your username and password. Use your UT-EID and password.  Prepend your EID with "austin\". For example, austin\eid

Mapping a drive

  1. Right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop.
  2. Highlight "Map Network Drive." Left-click on it.
  3. In the box labeled "Path:" type \\home.engr.utexas.edu\users\yourUsername where yourUsername is your ENGR Active Directory account (for most of you, this username will match your UT-EID).
  4. You will be asked for a username and password. In the username box type austin\[yourEID] and in the password box type your EID password.

Disk Quotas: 500 MB.

You will receive email notifications when you reach 80% of your quota. If you are unable to save anything to the Z: drive, you are most likely over quota and you will need to delete some files to bring your directory under quota again.

To check your home directory size, highlight everything under the Z: drive in the Windows Explorer and type Alt-Enter. You will see the total amount of space used on the drive. If it's greater than 500 MBs, then the system won't let you save anything to the drive until you bring that down below 500 MBs.

Backup & Restore

The Cockrell School of Engineering File Server is backed up in case of catastrophic failure.  In the event of accidental or unexpected data loss you can restore a file or folder that has been deleted or a previous version of a file that has become corrupt.  Please see File Restore for details.
