"Blackberry" refers to a handheld device that can be used to remotely check your e-mail and calendar appointments. Essentially, it functions as a mobile extension of Outlook. The installation/setup and troubleshooting of this device is provided by ITG Service Desk. A service, similar to a cell phone service, must be purchased and is charged on a monthly basis. At present, ITG currently utilizes service provided by AT&T (formerly Cingular). Requirements:
- User must have a Cockrell School of Engineering Exchange Account (Request Account)
- Data plan must include "Blackberry Enterprise Server" support. With AT&T, this plan is called "BlackBerry Enterprise"
- User must purchase a Blackberry Server license (Order License)
- Must have device capable of running Blackberry Desktop Software Version 4.
Basics:
- Send/receive e-mails and calendar appointments
- Wireless synchronization of contacts and tasks
- Can use anywhere (carrier dependant)
- High capacity memory (can store thousands of e-mails)
- Long lasting battery (can be used up to nine days without recharging)
- Comes with built-in attachment reader for viewing of Microsoft Word or Excel documents
- Can be used to tether, like a modem, with your laptop device (requires tethering plan)
- Can be enabled for international use. Plans available for Asia/Pacific, Europe, and Latin America

- shop the current options at (83xx or 88xx models recommended)

- Then enter your UMBS address (aka @mail email address) and you will get your own email and link to the premier site.
- Communication Device Allowance may be relevant.
Pricing:
- With newer models becoming available, the prices of model currently used by the Cockrell School of Engineering is subject to change
- At the time of purchase, a one time license fee of less than $100 must be paid to activate the device (Order License)
- Service contracts are comparable to standard cell phone plans, depending on where you purchase the device and what number of plan minutes you choose to go along with it
