The Student Engineering Council was formed in 1952 by a group
of students interested in the excavation of a student lounge beneath Taylor
Hall. Since its inception, the organization has greatly expanded its role,
establishing itself as the representative body for undergraduate students in the
Cockrell School of Engineering. In 1994-95, the SEC was named the Most Outstanding
Campus Organization on the UT campus, and in 1992-93, 1995-96 and 1997-98 the
Most Outstanding Student Government Organization by the UT Leadership Board.
Today, the SEC is dedicated to the service of all engineering
students as well as the various engineering societies that can be found on
campus. The organization has charged itself with the duties of building a strong
engineering community at The University of Texas, coordinating student concerns
with engineering faculty and administration, and conducting programs that
support the well-being of engineering students, the University, and the Austin
community. Members and societies comprise the main focus of the SEC and are
considered to be its principal customers. Other customers include University
administration, corporate partners, the National Association of Engineering
Student Councils (NAESC), and engineering councils at other universities.
Activities include the Engineering EXPO Career Fair, Faculty
Appreciation Week, National Engineers’ Week programs (including the popular
Engineers Day at the Mall), Halloween Canned Food Drive, and numerous others.
The SEC also cosponsors the Engineering Fall Gathering with the Office of
Student Life and assists in new student orientation programs.
SEC membership is comprised of members-at-large, freshmen representatives,
society representatives, and associate members. All students in the School are
welcome to become members. The SEC is dedicated to serving its members and
promoting involvement in the Cockrell School of Engineering. If you would like to know
more about the SEC, please drop by the office at any time.
