Cover letters are sales
letters, and YOU are the product. Cover
letters introduce you, and resumes tell about you.
Like the resume, the cover letter is another
important marketing tool.
Remember, you do not get a
second chance to make a first impression. Your
cover letter creates your first impression, and
you want that impression to be positive.
Purposes of Cover Letters
- Create a favorable first
impression
- Introduce yourself
- Demonstrate your
professionalism
- Illustrate your
communication skills
Company requirements often
list "good communication skills."
Demonstrate those skills through your cover
letter.
Three Parts of a Cover
Letter
Part I
Create interest in yourself
with a first paragraph that explains why you are
writing. Command attention by referring to the
type of position for which you are applying and
how you heard about the opening or the
organization. Also in your first paragraph, refer
to your enclosed resume.
Part II
The middle paragraph(s)
explains your interest in this type of position.
Relate your qualifications to the job opening, and
use action verbs to describe your
experience. Your resume contains the details so be
brief, be specific, and be confident as you
highlight what you have to offer.
Part III
Your closing paragraph
requests action, such as an appointment, an
interview, or some other definite action. Make
action easy for the reader to take. Close by
restating your interest in the company.
