Best Practices

We work very closely with our students and employers and can offer you strategies to help make your recruiting efforts successful.

  • Customize recruiting strategies according to the universities you visit.  What works at one university campus may not work at all.  Recruiting dates and deadlines vary among universities across the nation and in some cases across schools and colleges within the same university.  Larger universities may have decentralized career services.  The policies and recruiting processes for The University of Texas at Austin Engineering Career Assistance Center are different from those of the university's School of Business, College of Natural Sciences, and others.  Familiarize yourself with the policies of each university and career center and your visits will be more effective.
  • Host an information session.  At the Engineering Career Assistance Center, information sessions are presentations employers give to students the evening before on-campus interviews. Information sessions are a great way to answer students' questions, and introduce your organization to them.
  • Bring enough recruiters to interview students in their own career centers.  The career centers at The University of Texas at Austin have a policy that will not allow more than 25 percent of a schedule to be filled by students outside their school.  To recruit students in multiple colleges here, please connect with each career office.
  • Bring knowledgeable, enthusiastic recruiters to career fairs, information sessions, and on-campus interviews.  Each year, we ask our students for feedback as to what employers do well when recruiting.  Some answers that we get consistently from students are that they appreciate recruiters who are prepared, enthusiastic, and genuinely show an interest in them.  Employers should choose recruiters carefully because their attitude affects the organization's reputation. Good interaction with students helps generate positive word-of-mouth and interest.
  • Meet on-campus recruiting deadlines for preselect schedules.  By submitting job descriptions before the deadline, you give students time to review your job descriptions and research your organization before submitting their resumes. Turning in selections on time is appreciated by the ECAC and students as well. Selection due dates cannot be extended because of the online scheduling timeline.
  • Invite the maximum number of students for your schedule as well as alternates.  Inviting the maximum number of students you can fit in a day's schedule, plus some alternates, is one way to help guarantee a full schedule. Selecting alternates is always a good idea in case an invitee cannot select a time slot. Invited students are guaranteed a time slot during the first 24 hours of the time slot selection period.  After that, alternates can select time slots not already taken by invited students.
  • Arrive in Austin the day before your interviews to avoid travel delays.  Students schedule their interviews around their class schedule and may not be able to adjust their schedule when recruiters run late.
  • Stay on schedule.  Because students schedule their interviews before and after classes, it is very important to stay on schedule.  The traditional interview schedule is back-to-back timeslots with no breaks in between. If you selected 30 minute interviews, it is very important to limit the interview to 30 minutes so that students will not be late to class.
