As my senior year of high school rapidly approached, I was
uncertain as to what I wanted to study in college. I knew that I
enjoyed math and science, thus people suggested engineering, but I
was unsure about what the field entailed.
Throughout the week-long MITE program, I benefited from
interactions with UT engineering student leaders and distinguished
faculty, participated in hands-on activities, tours and even
experienced college dorm life! In addition, I was able to form
lasting relationships with my peers and the wonderful counselors as
well as fully understand the many opportunities engineering has to
offer (which ultimately led to my choice of major).
Currently, I am a sophomore majoring in Chemical Engineering at the
University of Texas. I am an active member and officer in several
organizations such as the National Society of Black Engineers and
Student Engineers Educating Kids. Also, I am an Engineering Peer
Leader in which I mentor and help first year students make a
smooth transition into the university.
MITE is an experience that truly impacts and influences the lives of
high school students as well as the counselors who volunteer their
time. It served as my first exposure to the field of engineering as
well as UT and since then I have been hooked! As I look towards the
future, I hope to work in a challenging field that will allow me to
employ my chemical engineering knowledge to solve energy related
problems.
