Texas Research Experience

The Texas Research Experience (TREX) program is an opportunity for successful upper division students to:
  • Further enhance their academic experience with undergraduate research
  • Learn about careers in research and product development in an academic setting
  • Learn about the benefits of obtaining a graduate engineering degree
  • Use the experience to become a competitive graduate school applicant

Selected TREX participants demonstrate exceptional academic competence, leadership skills, independence and ingenuity, and the ability to balance multiple responsibilities.

If selected, the TREX participant must:
  • Perform 10-14 hours of research/lab work each week
  • Submit monthly progress reports
  • Enroll in a one hour course, 4pm to 5pm, for the Fall and Spring semesters
  • Attend weekly meetings & workshops
  • Receive Satisfactory Mid-Year Evaluation to continue in Spring 2009
  • Complete an abstract, report, poster, and PowerPoint presentation
  • Submit and present a final report in April 2009
  • Attend the EOE Excellence Awards Banquet
  • Possibly present research findings at a conference
In return the TREX participant receives:
  • Exposure to industry representatives and faculty members
  • Valuable research experience
  • Valuable experience in preparing papers and presentations
  • Monthly stipend totaling $1300/semester (for two semesters)
  • A competitive edge over other graduate school applicants
