Dr. J.K. Aggarwal earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1964, and joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin that same year. He is the director of the Computer and Vision Research Center and has received the 2004 K. S. Fu Prize from the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR), the 2005 Leon K. Kirchmayer Graduate Teaching Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the 2007 Okawa Prize.

Dr. Aggarwal researches image processing, pattern recognition and computer vision. He develops techniques for the automatic recognition of human activity and interactions in video sequences, and techniques for the automatic recognition and retrieval of images and videos from databases. One goal is to build a bridge between human motion understanding and content-based video retrieval and summarization for the automatic analysis and understanding of video. In addition, he has helped develop software for seismic data processing and software for modeling of real objects that estimates the objects’ structure from multiple views. Dr. Aggarwal is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the IAPR, and the IEEE. He holds the Cullen Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering No. 2.
