Dr. Ivo M. Babuska earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering in 1951 from the Technical University, Prague. In 1955 he earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, in Prague, Czechoslovakia; Prague is now in the Czech Republic. In 1960 he earned Doctor of Science, a higher degree than a Ph.D., in mathematics Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. The D.Sc. is the highest degree that can be earned, having no equivalent in the U.S. Dr. Babuska joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 1995, where he is affiliated with the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the nations highest honor for engineering professionals. He has also received the top honor from the Academy Council of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

Babuska specializes in the numerical solutions of partial differential equations, especially the finite element method, and applied mathematics in general. One major field of application is continuum mechanics. Babuska has made significant contributions to the theory and implementation of finite element methods for computer-based engineering analysis and design.
