Dr. Jonathan F. Bard earned his D.Sc. (doctorate of science) in operations research from The George Washington University in 1979. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 1984. He is associate director for the Center for the Management of Operations Logistics, and coordinator of the University’s Operations Research and Industrial Engineering Program.

Dr. Bard develops basic theories and algorithms to analyze and control large-scale industrial systems. For example, he develops computer models to improve the efficiency of vehicle routing, personnel scheduling, airline operations, and the design of manufacturing facilities. Bard helped design the next generation of scheduling tools for factory automation and shop floor control. He uses advanced optimization techniques and intelligent heuristics, or logic-based adaptive procedures, to improve system performance while reducing personnel and support requirements. The models Bard develops take into account the rigid engineering specifications of an operation and the necessary business demands of getting a product to market.
