Dr. David F. Beer earned his Ph.D. in English from The University of New Mexico in 1973. He joined the faculty of the College of Engineering in 1985 after transferring from the English Department to develop a technical communication program for engineering students. Dr. Beer is chair of the Technical Communication Committee of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department.
Beer researches making highly technical subjects accessible to non-technical audiences. He often consults with high-tech industries on writing and editing matters, and gives workshops on technical communication on a regular basis in some of these companies. Beer teaches junior-level technical communication courses and engineering writing courses. He wrote a textbook on the subject, “A Guide to Writing as an Engineer.”
