Dr. Alan C. Bovik earned his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1984. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin that same year. Dr. Bovik directs the Laboratory for Image and Video Engineering.
Bovik researches digital video, image processing and computational aspects of biological visual perception. Over the past 25 years he has developed techniques for improving and measuring the quality of digital images and videos, created influential models for the analysis of patterns in images, and made systems for image and video compression. Bovik has also contributed widely to the field of biomedical image processing. His research applies to biomedical image analysis, wireless video, and the viewing of images on desktop computers, laptops, television and in movie theaters.
