Dr. Michael D. Bryant earned his Ph.D. in engineering sciences and applied mathematics from Northwestern University in 1981. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 1988. Dr. Bryant received a National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award in 1985.
Bryant specializes in tribology, the study of friction, wear, and lubrication, and mechatronics, which integrates mechanical, electrical, and computer elements into “modern” machines. In one current project, he models and measures the wear of electrical brushes, which are devices in electric motors that conduct current between stationary wires and moving parts. In other projects, Bryant conducts model-based diagnostics of motors, gears and pumps, and designs and constructs a mixed-signal, analog and digital, computer system.
Research interests:
- Tribology and mechanics
- Mechatronics, modeling and control of dynamic systems
- Integrated systems design and manufacturing
- Mixed-signal electronics
