Dr. Sean Buckley earned his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 2000. He joined the faculty of the College of Engineering in 2004. He is affiliated with the Center for Space Research.

Dr. Buckley researches ground motion and earth surface deformation phenomena. He develops algorithms that extract and process information from interferometric synthetic aperture radar, a remote sensing technique that uses radar satellite images. Remote sensing is a method to gather information about the environment from distant measuring devices on aircraft or spacecraft. The satellites Buckley works with constantly shoot radar waves towards the earth, and record data when the waves bounce back from the earth’s surface. At the Center for Space Research, Buckley’s work helps develop methods for topographic mapping, with an emphasis on coastal environments.
