Dr. Shaochen Chen earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 1999. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 2001. Dr. Chen in 2001 received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the highest honor for young engineering researchers. Chen directs the Nano-Opto-Bio Engineering Laboratory.
Chen researches nanoscale optical engineering, nanomanufacturing, and micro- and nano-electro-mechanical systems to advance biomedical engineering, life sciences, and information technology. His work in laser micro and nanoprocessing of biopolymers will lead to implantable micro-devices for nerve regeneration and controlled tissue growth. In one current micro-electro-mechanical systems project, Chen is developing micro-optics for cardiovascular diagnostics.
