Dr. Derek Chiou earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1999. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 2005.
Dr. Chiou researches simulation techniques and the architectures of computers, parallel computers and Internet routers. He is developing a very accurate simulator that is thousands of times faster than current simulators, and will allow computer architects and users to better evaluate the complex behavior of computer systems. The fastest current simulators are about 300,000 times slower than high-performance computers. These simulators can take more than a year to model just two minutes of runtime for a real computer. Chiou is using reconfigurable hardware to develop a simulator that would be 1,000 to 10,000 times faster than the best current simulators, modeling the same two minutes of runtime in a few hours as opposed to a year.
