Dr. Kenneth R. Diller earned his Sc.D., the equivalent of a Ph.D., in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 1973. Dr. Diller is chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Diller develops solutions to many types of biomedical problems by applying the principles of thermodynamics, and heat and mass transfer. He uses light microscopy to investigate the dynamics of biological processes at high and low temperatures. Diller researches the frozen banking of human tissues for transplantation, and analyzes the microvascular basis of burn injuries to optimize burn therapy. He develops thermodynamic models of micro- and macroscopic processes in biological systems, and develops computer vision techniques for quantitative measurement and interpretation of microscopic images. His latest research involves heat shock proteins that protect cells against extreme physical and environmental stress. Physicians could use this research to speed recovery for heart surgery patients.
