Dr. David S. Dolling earned his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from London University in 1977. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 1983. He is affiliated with the Center for Aeromechanics Research.

Dr. Dolling’s research interests are in supersonic and hypersonic turbulent fluid dynamics and aerodynamics. Supersonic speeds are typically considered to be in the range of Mach 1 to 5, or one to five times the speed of sound. Hypersonic speeds are typically Mach 5 and above. Dolling seeks to understand the physics of unsteady, shock-wave induced turbulent separated flows, especially the causes of low frequency, large-scale unsteadiness. This work improves computer codes that simulate such flows. Dolling’s research applies to the design of supersonic aircraft engine inlets, aerodynamic control surfaces on high-speed aircraft and missiles, reaction-control jets, and other applications where shock-induced, turbulent separation occurs. Dolling is currently researching fluid dynamics of scramjet inlet and isolator combinations and their interactions with combustors, particularly engine unstart.
