Dr. Thomas F. Edgar earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Princeton University in 1971. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in that same year. He is a co-director of Texas-Wisconsin Modeling and Control Consortium.

Dr. Edgar carries out research in process modeling, control and optimization. He develops algorithms and techniques for control systems, or computers in manufacturing plants that assess the quality of production by processing data from automated devices used in fabrication. These control techniques can provide an increased yield and higher quality products. He is working with semiconductor fabrication companies to improve run-to-run processes, which allow engineers to create one “run” of chips, assess the quality, and then make improvements to the next “run”. Edgar is also studying monitoring and control techniques to improve the operation of bioreactors, and is investigating the control and optimization of carbon dioxide removal from power plants.
