Dr. Kevin Folliard earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University
of California, Berkeley in 1995. He joined the faculty of The University of
Texas at Austin in 1999.
Dr. Folliard researches the durability of concrete exposed to harsh
environments. He has studied concrete materials used for pavements, bridges,
retaining walls and other structures. Much of his work has focused on two types
of chemical reactions which can lead to decay and structural failure in concrete
structures. Alkali-silica reaction involves a reaction between cement, sand and
gravel, and delayed formation of ettringite, type of mineral, occurs when
concrete gets too hot in the first day after construction. Both lead to cracking
and can shorten concrete’s useful life. Dr. Folliard’s research has focused on
how to prevent these types of concrete decay.
