Dr. David Fowler earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of
Colorado at Boulder in 1965. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at
Austin in 1964. He directs the
International Center for
Aggregates Research. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
In 2000, he was named a University Distinguished Teaching Professor.
Dr. Fowler’s research interests include concrete-polymer materials such as polymer
concrete for repair of bridges and pavements; aggregates used in concrete, including
micro fines, a byproduct of crushing stone; repair materials and methods for concrete
bridges and pavements; self-consolidating concrete; optimization of aggregate grading
to use less cement in concrete; and forensic analysis of structures. He has done
considerable research on the use of recycled materials, including plastics and aggregates,
in concrete. He consults on problems requiring forensic analysis to determine the cause
of failure and teaches a graduate course in forensic engineering. Other courses include
concrete materials, repair of concrete, wood engineering, and design of concrete structures.
Research interests:
- Concrete-polymer materials
- Repair of concrete
- Aggregates used in Portland cement concreteconcrete-polymer materials
