Dr. Richard Furlong earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering from The University
of Texas at Austin in 1963. He joined the university’s faculty in 1958 after 6
years of consulting.
Dr. Furlong studied and published research on composite steel-concrete columns
in addition to reinforced concrete design aids for reinforced concrete columns
and for footings. His subsequent research involved limit design for inelastic
behavior of concrete including methods of analysis. His research on inverted
T-beams has been adapted nationally for the design of bridge bents. Much of his
research has been incorporated into design standards for both steel and for
concrete structures. He has promoted the simplification of design practice, and
he advocated second order analysis for sway effects in frames 25 years before it
became common practice. His pioneering software for reinforced concrete design
aids with personal computers was designated as the most popular such software
sold by the American Concrete Institute.
Research interests:
- Reinforced concrete design
- Structural analysis
- Steel-concrete composite structures
