Dr. George Georgiou earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Cornell University in 1987 and joined the faculty at The University of Texas at Austin in 1986. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Microbiology, currently holds the Cockrell Family Regents Chair in Engineering No. 9, and has received numerous international awards.
Dr. Georgiou is working on protein engineering and production technologies with focus on therapeutics. He co-developed the leading protein therapeutic for treating inhaled anthrax, which is currently undergoing clinical evaluation by Elusys Therapeutics, Inc. Other research in progress includes the engineering of therapeutic enzymes for certain cancers, and of antibodies to treat autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. His group is also developing general technologies for accelerating the discovery and production of protein drugs.
Research Interests:
- Development of high throughput technology to aid protein discovery
- Structure, function and engineering of therapeutic antibodies
- Engineering of novel enzyme for therapeutic applications
- The mechanism of protein folding and secretion in bacteria and the production of complex pharmaceuticals
- The mechanism of RNA degradation in bacteria
