Dr. Omar Ghattas earned his Ph.D. in computational mechanics from Duke University in 1988. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 2005. He directs the Center for Computational Geosciences in the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences. He received the Gordon Bell Prize for Special Accomplishment in Supercomputing in 2003.

Dr. Ghattas has general research interests in large-scale forward and inverse modeling and simulation on parallel supercomputers. His research specifically focuses on optimization, parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification for problems in the geological, mechanical and biomedical engineering sciences. Recent research projects include: modeling of earthquakes in Southern California; cardiac image registration and inverse electromechanics modeling; optimal design of the next generation linear collider (particle accelerator); inverse problems for subsurface flows; and estimation and prediction of contaminant transport. Ghattas also serves as Chief Applications Scientist for the 400 teraflops supercomputer at the Texas Advanced Supercomputing Center.
