Dr. Joydeep Ghosh earned his Ph.D. in computer engineering from the
University of Southern California in 1988. He joined the faculty of The
University of Texas at Austin in 1988. He directs the
Intelligent Data
Exploration and Analysis Lab.
Dr. Ghosh researches data mining, which is a way of analyzing large
quantities of data for useful patterns and trends. The data which Ghosh
considers includes text, hyperlinks, images and market research data. This
research helps e-commerce and other businesses adapt their websites and
products to fit the needs of customers. His lab has developed means of
pervasive personalization in which a person’s varied experiences with the
Web, including using wireless connections, are tailored according to
location, time and device. He developed a system that can extract, analyze
and manage large sets of remotely sensed data used for classifying a large
variety of land covers in environmentally sensitive ecosystems. He also
devised a program to assist in compiling and analyzing large and diverse
sources of data which biologists believe will reveal the functions of the
human body’s roughly 30,000 genes.
Research interests:
- Adaptive multi-learner systems
- Intelligent data analysis
- Data and web mining
