Dr. Thomas Hughes earned his Ph.D. in engineering science from the University
of California, Berkeley in 1974. He joined the faculty of The University of
Texas at Austin in 2002. In 1995, he was elected to the National Academy of
Engineering.
Dr. Hughes researches computational methods in solid, structural and fluid
mechanics. He has studied stabilized and multiscale methods to solve the partial differential equations governing fluid behavior.
More recently, he has developed cardiovascular modeling and simulation procedures that use patient-specific
imaging data. This allows medical professionals to implement various medical
interventions and make decisions based on predicted outcomes. His latest work attempts to
integrate computer-aided design and analysis through a unified geometric framework.
Research interests:
- Computational solid, structural and fluid mechanics, and fluid-structure interaction
- Multiscale and stabilized methods in turbulence
- Cardiovascular modeling and simulation
- Isogeometric analysis
