Dr. Gyeong Hwang earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1999. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 2001. In 2005, he won a Faculty Early Career Development Award from the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Hwang researches atomistic mechanisms underlying the synthesis and manipulation of nanostructured materials and systems. Recently, his research has focused on understanding how synthesis conditions influence the structure and properties of tiny silicon-germanium-oxide crystals and wires with dimensions of only a few nanometers. In addition, his group has studied: the fundamental behavior and properties of defects and chemical impurities in semiconductors, oxides, and their interfaces; the self-assembly of organic functions on semiconductor surfaces; the structure and chemistry of metal nanocatalysts supported on oxides; and the defect chemistry of amorphous oxides. Hwang’s research offers an invaluable guide to the rational design and manufacturing of advanced miniature devices for transistor, laser, sensor and fuel cell applications. His lab also develops simulation tools to address highly non-equilibrium processing issues by integrating various numerical techniques at different time and length scales.
