Dr. James Jirsa earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1963. He
joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin in 1972. In 1988, he was
elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
Dr. Jirsa researches the durability of reinforced concrete structures during
earthquakes and how to repair and strengthen structures in preparation for
earthquakes. A leading authority on earthquake engineering and concrete
reinforcement, his research seeks to ensure that building construction is
economical, durable and safe. Jirsa has won international recognition as a
leading, applications-oriented researcher with the ability to present his
findings in a clear, concise manner and to translate them into practice. His
projects span the globe from the United States to Japan, Europe and New Zealand.
His contributions to the American Concrete Institute’s building code and the
design specifications of the American Association of State Highway and
Transportation Officials are fundamental to the discipline.
