Dr. Maria Juenger earned her Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from
Northwestern University in 1999. She joined the faculty of The University of
Texas at Austin in 2002. In 2005, she won a Faculty Early Career Development
Award from the National Science Foundation.
Dr. Juenger researches materials used in civil engineering applications. Trained
as a chemist, she primarily examines chemical issues in cement-based materials,
including hydration of Portland cement and its constituent phases,
microstructure development in Portland cement, and chemical deterioration
processes in concrete. Her research also takes a “materials science” approach to
studying cement and concrete by investigating the complex interrelationship
between processing, chemistry, microstructure and properties. She is interested
in reducing the negative environmental impact of concrete by finding creative
means of improving production processes and promoting recycling, while improving
concrete’s durability. Juenger is investigating the impact of waste materials as kiln feed in cement
clinker manufacturing, including their impact on phase formation and performance. She is also working with
a relatively new type of cement, sulfoaluminate belite cements, which emit less CO2 and use less energy in
manufacturing
Research interests:
- Environmentally friendly concrete
- Cement microstructure
- Concrete durability
- Blended cements
