Dr. Kerry Kinney earned her Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering in 1996 from the University of California, Davis. She received a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award in 1999.
Kinney's research in the field of air pollution control focuses on the design and optimization of vapor phase bioreactors to treat air contaminated with volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides. Vapor phase bioreactors are an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional treatment technologies; they use bacteria and microorganisms to break down harmful chemicals into safe substances such as water and carbon dioxide. Dr. Kinney's research team is currently developing bioreactors to treat waste gas streams from paint spray booth operations as well as from hazardous waste site remediation processes. She also recently began investigating the impact of bioaerosals, or microorganisms, particles and gases, on indoor air quality.
Research Interests:
- Design and optimization of vapor phase bioreactors
- Treatment of volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides
- Remediation of hazardous waste sites
- Impact of microorganisms, particles and gases on indoor air quality
