Dr. Dale Klein earned his Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of
Missouri-Columbia in 1977. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at
Austin that same year.
Klein is currently on leave from The University of Texas at Austin and serving
as commissioner of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, a federal agency that
regulates nuclear reactors, materials and wastes. As the chairman of the
commission, a position to which he was appointed in May 2006, he serves as its
principal executive officer and spokesman and is responsible for the
administrative, organizational, long-range planning, budgetary and certain
personnel functions of the agency. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission formulates
policies, develops regulations governing safety of nuclear reactors and nuclear
materials, issues orders to licensees and adjudicates legal matters.
His work at UT included researching radioactive waste disposal, thermal analysis
of nuclear shipping containers, nuclear weapon dismantlement and nuclear power.
