Dr. Dale Klein earned his Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1977. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin that same year.

Klein is currently on leave from The University of Texas at Austin and serving as commissioner of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, a federal agency that regulates nuclear reactors, materials and wastes. As the chairman of the commission, a position to which he was appointed in May 2006, he serves as its principal executive officer and spokesman and is responsible for the administrative, organizational, long-range planning, budgetary and certain personnel functions of the agency. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission formulates policies, develops regulations governing safety of nuclear reactors and nuclear materials, issues orders to licensees and adjudicates legal matters.

His work at UT included researching radioactive waste disposal, thermal analysis of nuclear shipping containers, nuclear weapon dismantlement and nuclear power.
