Dr. Kara Kockelman earned her Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University
of California, Berkeley in 1998. She joined the faculty of The University of
Texas at Austin that same year. In 2002, she was named one of the world's
top young innovators by Technology Review, MIT's magazine of innovation.
Dr. Kockelman's primary research interests include the statistical modeling of
urban systems (including models of travel behavior, trade and location choice),
the economic impacts of transport policy, crash occurrence and consequences, and
transport policy-making. She has modeled location and travel behaviors in the
Dallas-Ft. Worth, Austin and San Francisco Bay areas, using various roadway
pricing scenarios. Dr. Kockelman has analyzed national crash databases and
collected new data for analyses of home buyer choices, traffic flow and property
values. She has also researched travel choices in the face of rising gasoline
prices.
Research interests:
- Travel behavior and trade
- Urban form and land development
- Transportation planning and policy-making
- Traffic flow and safety
