Dr. Alexis Kwasinski earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2007.
Dr. Kwasinski researches microgrids, which are relatively small electric networks powered by their own local sources. Microgrids can locally improve power supply availability and provide a direct way of integrating alternative energy sources, including fuel cells, photovoltaic modules, and small wind generators, into a large electric grid. Microgrid technologies can also be directly extended into other applications, such as electric cars.
Dr. Kwasinski is currently studying a broad set of research problems related with microgrids with emphasis on system and electronic interfaces design and control. He is also interested in analyzing the effects of natural disasters on critical power infrastructure, such as communication networks power supply, and studying ways of reducing the vulnerability of these critical power infrastructures to such severe events.
Research Interests:
- Power electronics
- Distributed generation including integration of alternative energy sources
- Electrical energy conversion and storage
- Ultra-reliable and fault-tolerant power system architectures
- Switching and non-linear controls
